How some small business have insulated themselves from the recession
Though not a new concept, the idea of buying local products - from a nearby farm, for example - has grown increasingly trendy in recent years.
Some independent businesses that advocate the buy local mantra now say it has helped them fare better than the average business during the recession.
According to an article in Business Week, intangible benefits like vibrant downtown district, stores with local character and a personal relationship with businesses owners help market the buy local movement.
During gloomy economic periods, those positive benefits are uplifting.
Meanwhile, many small business owners continue to wonder when the economy will regain momentum.
In a speech to a business crowd in Brampton, Ontario, Prime Minister Stephen Harper predicted that Canada will emerge from this global financial crisis faster than its peers. The country is better positioned for recovery, he said, given its avoidance of any major bank failures or a similar housing crisis.
Harper did add one caveat - recovery will not begin until the U.S. financial sector is repaired.
