In the upcoming quarter, 15 percent of Canadian employers expect to increase payroll numbers while only 9 percent are planning to reduce workforces.
According to the lasts Manpower Employment Outlook Survey, 73 percent of survey respondents plan to maintain current staff levels indicating a "quiet hiring climate for the second quarter of 2009."
Manpower explains that hiring confidence numbers in Canada have dropped from previous quarters, but there are some businesses eyeing growth.
Lori Rogers, vice president of operations for Manpower Canada says, "Canadian employers are telling us that while they will continue to increase their payrolls they will do so at a more cautious pace than in the previous quarters."
The forward-looking survey from Manpower reaches 1,900 Canadian businesses to gather important views on anticipated changes in employment practices and what that could mean for the broader economy.
Results of the survey vary by region and industry. For example, Atlantic and Western Canada hiring outlooks are above the national average while Ontario's forecast for hiring is much quieter for the upcoming quarter.
