New survey results reveal insight into payment processing and other data security measures

Although 41 percent of small businesses believe that data hackers would not target their business because of the size, many have taken a number of security measures to protect the business and its customers.

According to new data from a Visa survey of 885 small business owners, 94 percent of respondents believe that securing data is meaningful to customers.

"Regardless of the size of the enterprise, it's important for business owners to appreciate the importance of data security and what steps they should take to protect their customers and business," comments Gord Jamieson, head of payment system risk at Visa Canada.

Of the respondents who maintain electronic files containing customer information, 86 percent claim to either encrypt the data, ensure it is password protected or both.
Visa is offering free fraud prevention lectures in a number of Canadian cities including Winnipeg, Calgary and Toronto to educate small businesses about data security issues including secure payment processing, protecting credit card information, and PIN technology.

The seminars are part of the company's annual fraud prevention month activities.
