Government program helps students launch small businesses
Ontario students of all ages - well, those from 15 - 29 - have the opportunity to launch a small business with funding from Summer Company.
The Ontario government-sponsored Summer Company program gives students an opportunity to flex their entrepreneurial muscle and earn funding for a 12-week small business venture.
The program, which anticipates between 300 and 400 student participants this year, provides practical business training and mentoring to accepted applicants.
A former student participant extols the benefits of the program beyond just the funding.
"Summer Company was a great opportunity to help turn my business idea into a reality," says Joseph Moncada, a 2006 program participant and current small business owner. "It introduced me to new marketing connections that have endured," he says.
Given the important role small and medium-sized businesses play in the Ontario economy, a head-start program like this one can benefit the broader population.
New business owners, like the Summer Company participants, learn quickly about the necessary skills and tools needed to launch a successful business.
Coordinating payroll and hiring staff go on behind the scenes while website hosting, promotions, and a company logo are necessary to win new business.
