Industry exports report on domain name registration growth and other efforts
A new report from VeriSign shows 24 million new domain names added to the internet last year.
The fourth quarter edition of the 2008 Domain Name Industry Brief published by internet infrastructure services provider VeriSign says that 177 million domain name registrations were recorded as of yearend.
This figure represents a 16 percent growth rate over 2007.
With businesses, agencies, and individuals racing to create an online presence, it is not totally surprising that 10.1 million new domain names were registered in the last three months of the year.
In addition to the staggering figures, the VeriSign report says that the global internet community is working closely to forge a common way for people of all languages to use the internet.
The idea of a "universally accessible internet" is a possibility. "But it must be done right," says Jill McNabb, vice president of naming services at VeriSign.
"A careless or rushed approach will expose the community to a high risk of failure over technical and business issues," she continues.
Uneven browser support, local network limitations, and general public confusion are the pressing forces behind the international internet community's desire to streamline the global domains.
