A new report says good privacy practices help small businesses remain competitive

Some small businesses can do more to ensure the security of online shoppers' personal information when visiting a company website, says a new survey.

But those small businesses that maintain a strong privacy policy may find they have an edge over competitors.

This is according to a new TRUSTe survey of small businesses operating ecommerce sites. TRUSTe reports that over half of small business owners surveyed do not have a privacy policy on their website and 21 percent of respondents are not certain their pages are encrypted.

Fran Maier, CEO of the web privacy company, said "Over more than ten years of working closely with small businesses on online trust, we've found that things that may be overlooked - such as a sturdy privacy policy or airtight privacy measures - are the very elements that give small businesses an edge over their competitors."

Maier added that privacy policies can help build a strong brand reputation - which may be critical to some small businesses during a recession.
