Despite the economic climate, some industries including technology and manufacturing are currently hiring

Generally job loss and hiring reports are rather gloomy as large corporations let go of masses of talented workers.

And although some small businesses are feeling pressure from the down economy to reduce payroll numbers, many are still on the lookout for qualified staff to help grow the business.

According to an article in the Ottawa Citizen, a number of small and mid-sized companies - especially those in technical and knowledge-based services - are faring well, and looking to add to their staff.

In fact, a recent technology job fair in Ottawa attracted 2,000 job seekers and 55 exhibitors, many with multiple open spots to fill, noted the article.

The Ottawa Citizen reported that job fair attendees were mixed in their levels of optimism, with younger workers looking for employment being the most positive about finding a new position.

Young adult workers are also being targeted by some manufacturing companies that currently have an aging workforce and are looking for skilled workers to assume positions in the future.
