How ready-to-use software for payroll and tax management helps small business owners

As some small business owners try to do more with less, time is a valuable commodity.

Given the many pressing issues facing small business owners - marketing, managing the website, hiring new staff or in some cases reducing personnel - payroll management does not need to be on their to-do list.

According to an article from Money Sense magazine, more and more business are outsourcing time consuming activities like payroll management to third parties to free up time to focus on other business needs.

Some small business owners struggling to stay current on tax code changes are becoming increasingly reliant on ready-to-use software that facilitates payroll management by organizing deadlines and ensuring the company meets up-to-date regulations.

Many of these software programs are web-based with all the behind-the-scenes work accounted for off-site - including security and privacy issues.

An article in the Financial Post by industry expert Jamie Golombek says that two new regulations in the 2009 federal budget could help businesses save money.

To help ensure they capture the new changes, many small businesses rely on the expertise of outsourced payroll management.

View Article  Payroll Work Makes for a Heavy Load

For Jamie Tripp, payroll was always a headache. Like many small businesses, the Midland, Ont.-based paint dealer originally handled his payroll himself.

"We used paper-based tables provided by the government, and retained our source deductions, remitting to the government on a monthly basis," he recalls. This caused problems for the proprietor of Tripp's Paint and Decorating Shoppe, who is no different from other small business owners in that he has to be chief operating officer and president, all at once.

In the February 11 edition of the Financial Post.  Mr. Tripp explains how he uses NEBS PAYweb to reduce his payroll processing time and costs by over 75% and Patrick Culhane, president of the Canadian Payroll Association, provides tips for small businesses.
