Small businesses reveal expectations for budget management in new CFIB poll

Small businesses are often touted as the backbone of the economy. Many argue that it takes detailed financial planning and organization to be a successful small business owner.

It seems some small businesses hope to see their government display similar fiscal prudence.

According to a new survey from the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB), nearly two-thirds of New Brunswick small businesses are saying they do not support deficit planning.

While small business owners recognize that sometimes a deficit is inevitable due to economic conditions, the CFIB says, they do not advocate pre-planning for such conditions.

"The small business sector has consistently supported balanced budgets over the years," says Andreea Bourgeois, CFIB director of provincial affairs for New Brunswick.

"A business owner cannot run a business by planning to lose money. Business owners expect government to abide to the same strict standards when managing the finances of the province," she continues.

63 percent of survey respondents believe the government can help improve economic conditions through tax cuts or other savings measures for businesses.

Roughly 27 percent of the 343 businesses included in the CFIB survey back significant government spending to pull the economy out of its slump.
